What are the helath implications of iron?
Iron is not considered hazardous to health. Indeed, consumption of water can provide a significant proportion of human daily dietary requirement because the metal is essential for oxygen transport in the blood as it is part of haemoglobin. The World Health Organisation issues a guideline value of 2mg/L for drinking water. However, it can be considered an aesthetic contaminant as at higher levels (greater than 0.3mg/L) it may lead to staining of crockery and clothes, give a reddish colour to the water or even in extreme cases give a metallic taste and offensive odour to the water.
Iron in water
A common occurrence but as it is an essential blood component levels are not critical. WHO does not recommend a maximum level although above 300μg/L it may cause discolouration of the water that may be objectionable and cause staining.
How can the CW42® system help?
Where iron levels are troublesome, the Cw42 system can substantially reduce iron levels. Control of iron levels is useful to minimise aesthetic problems but total elimination is not desirable because of the need to have iron in the diet.
